Scientific literature strongly suggests that women with enough progesterone to balance
their estrogen are at a decreased risk for breast cancer. In two studies
-- one in which infertile women with progesterone deficiencies were shown
to have a 5.4 times greater risk for pre-menopausal breast cancer, the other
in which transdermal progesterone placed directly on the breast skin showed
inhibited breast cell proliferation -- dosages were similar to recommended
dosages of topically applied, over-the-counter progesterone creams (one
quarter to one half teaspoon once or twice per day anywhere on skin).
Dr. Christianne Northrupp editor of the highly regarded newsletter Health
Wisdom for Women, adds that irregular or heavy periods, fibroids, uterine
tumors, sedentary lifestyle, a body fat percentage over 28%, or HRT with
estrogen only may indicate estrogen excess or an estrogen/progesterone
imbalance. She recommends balancing high estrogen levels with progesterone.
