Dear Friends,
I hope you?fve had a great winter, and are feeling the same inspiring twinge of anticipation for spring that I am. Since returning from our Outer Banks Total Transformation(R) programs last fall (a fantastic experience), it has been a non-stop roller-coaster of mostly writing projects with a few great interruptions for research and appearances, including the fantastic Natural Products Expo West trade show and the HBA (health and beauty aid) technical conference I just attended this week. The 2007 edition of Truth About Beauty, with lots of new product resources (preview below!), has just gone to print and will be on the shelves in a month! The upside of all the research and hours at my computer is that lots of new articles about my approach are now being read by many who might not otherwise see them. And, of course, I can give you a preview!
Here’s what I’m offering in this newsletter:

A Favorite New Resource that went into the 2007 Truth Resource Guide
I had a great time researching products over the last year to go into this year’s resource guide. One of my new favorites that I was introduced to at ALIVE!! Expo in Seattle last year is Vital Choice Seafood. This is the premiere online mail-order source of what is regarded as the highest quality, wild Alaskan salmon and other wild fish. They are a great gift resource (especially if you want to send salmon or lox that actually is naturally red in color and high in omega fats, rather than full of red dyes and devoid of healthy fats, as most farmed salmon is. Vital Choice president Randy Hartnell has extended an offer for InformedBeauty.com subscribers to receive 15% off their first order when using the code: TRANSFORM! Call or visit Vital Choice at 800-608-4825 or click on this link to visit https://www.vitalchoice.com.

Rejected: Merck’s Poorly-Researched, Politically Dubious HPV Vaccine for Girls
In the last newsletter, I included a story about attempts by Merck to have HPV vaccinations mandated for young girls. As many of you know, Merck recently dropped its mammoth lobbying campaign to get states to require HPV vaccination of all young girls in public school. Merck’s opponents cited lack of research and potential interactions with other vaccines. "We just don't know enough to be mandating Gardasil for anyone, much less vulnerable 11- to 12-year-old girls entering puberty," said Barbara Loe Fisher, president of The National vaccine Information Center. Advocates for the vaccine countered by saying no evidence existed that Gardasil would react with other vaccines. My question is the obvious… how can there be evidence if this wasn’t adequately studied?
The most disturbing aspect of this whole campaign is the conflicts of interest. It was confirmed that the legislators who acted most aggressively to mandate this vaccine, like Governor Rick Perry of Texas, has strong ties to Merck (his former chief of staff is a lobbyist for Merck). Perry received thousands of dollars just before he issued his order to mandate the vaccine. And the political women’s organization called Women in Government (which strongly advocates the vaccine) has not only received substantial funding from Merck, but has used Gov. Perry’s wife as a speaker.
Courtney’s Recovery From Bulimia: A True Blue Total Transformation®
It doesn’t get much more powerful for me than to see someone with the same issues I had overcome them with the help of my program. Courtney Holden attended my program last fall. She came as a seven-year sufferer of bulimia, whom even the most expensive in-patient clinics would not prove to help. Having spent upwards of $30,000 on the “#1 eating disorder facility in the U.S.,” Courtney returned home with the same stubborn bulimia in full control over her. But something changed when she attended my program—both physically and emotionally. Since the first meal on my program, she faced her fear of food head-on, knowing I had conquered the very same disease. After a week of my program, she’d experienced such a radically different, nutrient-decadent type of nourishment than she ever had, and Courtney’s body and belief system would never be the same. Her doctor has, in the months since, been shocked with the miraculous changes, including a return of hormonal functioning and a complete end to obsession with the scale. Courtney’s skin dramatically improved. Courtney’s story and pictures will be included in an upcoming edition of The Truth About Beauty. I am grateful to her for sharing her story as it unfolds (it has only just begun, believe me) and giving my approach a chance!! She is an inspiration. We both send out thanks to Emily Fritchey of Sunshine Botanicals (a truly great skincare line) who turned Courtney on to my book.
For an upcoming edition of The Truth About Beauty, and in future editions of this newsletter, we will be including additional success stories from readers of the book and attendees of Total Transformation®. If I’ve helped you dramatically, I would love to hear from you in detail (need to know which of my principles and recommendations helped specifically, and what the outcome was). If eligible, we may be able to arrange a free Transformation Makeover and Photo Session at this year’s Total Transformation® programs (more details below). If you’d like to attend Total Transformation® in its entirety and share your story, you may be eligible for a discount. Let us know of your success by emailing us at info@informedBeauty.com or calling James at 877-54-TOTAL (86825).

Subscriber Comments “I've already tried some of the suggestions in the book and my chin acne seems to be disappearing after 20 years, and the new shampoo/conditioner have done wonders for my hair. Thanks!” —Diane M., New Jersey "I just got Kat's book. I am so glad I read about it in a recent issue of Better Nutrition. This all happened just in time, as I was scheduled to do a Este Lauder makeover this week. Will be canceling that and focusing on incorporating things I've learned in the book. Whew! I have been saved. :-) " |
Low Carb Comes Full Circle; Now You Just Need to Know How to Do it Right
A new study published in JAMA places very low carb diets in the lead for both weight loss and health benefits, at least after one year. Gardner and colleagues compared four famous diets over a 1-year period for both weight loss and common health risk factors in a trial that randomly assigned 311 overweight and premenopausal women. The diets tested were Atkins (very low carb), Zone (low carb), LEARN (low-fat, high carbohydrate), or Ornish (very high carbohydrate). The researchers found that those on the Atkins diet lost the most weight and showed the healthiest metabolic effects during 1 year of follow-up.
And speaking of die-hard low-fat myths…
Xenical (Orlistat), the formerly-prescription fat blocker, has been approved for over-the-counter sales. I doubt that this excites too many of you who are reading this, since you probably know from reading my book that fat is not the culprit in food obsession, weight gain and disease. The only time I recommend fat blockers (and why in the world wouldn't someone just choose a natural supplement, like chitosan, which has not been associated with intestinal scarring as Orlistat has) is during the transition (such as the first week of following my program) from being a sugar burner (as is at least 90% of the country) into being a fat burner, when consumption of healthy fats goes up, and one is still weaning off sugar (and not burning as much fat yet) and transitioning metabolically. And since all fat blockers have the potential to block or absorb both healthy fats (such as omega-3s) and fat soluble vitamins, such as vitamins A,E and D, those nutrients should be taken separately.
One of the built-in problems with using Xenical is its dubious recommendation to follow “a healthy weight loss plan including exercise and a low-fat diet.” The benefits and potential harm of low-fat diets have shown their limitations in a majority of people in numerous studies, such as the one I just discussed above. It all comes down to your situation. If you are naturally slim and did not grow up drinking sugary drinks and eating a lot of white flour and sweets, you still may do okay on a high-complex carb diet with relatively lower fat. But if you are like the roughly three-quarters of this country who has, via the American diet, been catapulted along the track to weight and metabolic challenges, then I encourage you to read my book and give yourself the opportunity to experiment with my approach, which puts a stop to metabolic assaults altogether, so you can biochemically recover the function nature never intended for you to lose. You will then, never need a fat blocker again. Your body will burn through it like rocket fuel. I can attest to that, and so does the science.
Nanotechnology: This Wave of the Future is a Double-edged Sword
Last week I attended a major beauty trade show here in New York City and was amazed to learn how nanotechnology can affect the delivery and efficacy of every topically-applied preparation, from cellulite, to hair loss, to wrinkle formulations. To give you an idea, nano-particles are so small, they can actually reach the dermal layer of the skin for the first time, sending substances like GABA (which relaxes muscles) so far into the skin that the mild, Botox®-like effect that it has on muscles can actually be seen within minutes and last for hours. Literally, we’re talking about a wrinkle-relaxing effect that happens before your very eyes from a cream (no injection necessary)! The quantum improvements in efficacy of cellulite and hair loss preparations were equally astonishing. This is the biggest news in skin care technology in ions, but the technology also carries serious safety considerations… of which some of the companies who capitalize on it tend to downplay... Delivering sometimes foreign or synthetic substances to locations and depths where they normally cannot go has raised some questions. Scientists specializing in nanotechnology admit that there are potential problems with substances having no way to leave the body, since these particles are smaller than atoms and literally penetrate cells and take or residence in cell receptors (therefore potentially blocking other needed actions pertaining to those receptors). I spoke with a microbiologist at the trade show who was concerned about this issue and surprised at the gruff response he received when he asked this question during the company’s presentation. Most of the formulators and researchers I spoke with agree that, just as with liposome delivery systems (nano particles are millions of times smaller, mind you), it is important, until we know more, that we at least use only natural substances in these nanotechnologies. More to come…
